Cryptocurrency by @capitalgainsstudio is a relatively quick strategy game where you attempt to make the most money from the cryptocurrency market!
In the game, there are 4 different cryptocurrencies to choose from as you hire new members to your team and get them to either mine or buy/sell the various cryptocurrencies. If you choose to mine, you can either put enough energy into the attempt or play a push your luck mini game to see if you’re able to mine some crypto.
Alternatively, you’ll be able to manipulate the market by buying and selling the various coins in order to change the price, as well as to earn some revenue to use in future rounds.
At the end of each round, you’ll be able to further manipulate the market through rumor cards, increasing/decreasing the price of the different crypto. Additionally, the crypto that has the lowest total rumor points (as the positive and negative rumors are added together) will be labeled as a scam and its price will drop to 0!
We really enjoyed this game as it felt like a condensed version of Stockpile, a game that we enjoy quite a bit. We liked how the push your luck element did not skew the strategy of the game too much as you could put all of your energy to ensure that you succeeded but that would prevent you from doing anything else.
An additional house rule that the designer @steve.cgs suggested was to provide a determination point to the team member that failed a mining attempt, which adds an energy to their next mine. This definitely does help prevent players from feeling as though they wasted their turn if their mining attempts failed.
The ability to manipulate the rumors was a lovely touch that made you feel as though you still have a chance even though you may not be doing well as there’s a chance you can manipulate the market in your favor!
While there is definitely some luck involved that may not be everyone’s cup of tea, we feel that this game is worth checking out as its a bundle of fun and a great mix of luck and strategy, all in about an hour of gameplay. And you get to learn a little about how cryptocurrency works too!
