I have tried multiple time to update to 1.6 but i get this error message every time. does anyone know what could be causing the problem? i am by no means very techy so i have no idea what i need to.

Please restore you backup to 1.5.3, deactivate all your plugins, do the update, activate your plugins back.
have you gone to the the update URL? ie: www.mysite.com/ow_updates/ goto this on your site and wait for it to say completed this has helped others fix the same problem (Paul Cuffe: http://www.oxwall.org/forum/topic/15194)

The links you provided were a great help and have solved the problems i was getting. Thanks for your very quick reply. It is much appreciated.
If anyone else has had the same problem i would highly sugest trying the link www.mysite.com/ow_updates/ It just seemed to solve all the issue i had in one go.
My newfeed is not work working on the mobile side of things so i will go have a look and see if anyone has had issues with that next.

I did wonder if that was you. Yes everything on the website seems to be ok now.
