I would have assumed that the new newsfeed plugin would have fixed published bugs that predated it's release, but...

I would suggest reverting to an older one, and only upgrade when deemed necessary. That's a common rule of thumb with stuff like this.

when you updated newsfeed you need to revert the changes (fix you provided earlier, here: http://www.oxwall.org/forum/topic/15542?page=2#post-82144)
