I had a user create a group but since then they left and now the group was created by "Deleted User".
I have tried going into the database and changed the userid from 193 (the ex user) to 1 (admin) to take over the group ownership.
This seems to have worked as admin is now the owner but the newsfeed still shows "deleted user" as the owner! Looks unprofessional. Can I fix this or just ignore it?

I did that and yes it does change the owner but the newsfeed doesn't change!

Yes, newsfeed and groups are different tables. And if you change any rows in one, it won't change in second. 
Currently, this works as described Michael: if you remove group's creator, there will be "deleted user" as group's owner and the only way to change it - change it in database. Don't change it in newsfeed, cos newsfeed's tables are more complicated and you can broke it easy.
