Hello all!

I have a mid-2012 15" 2.3GHz i7 MacBook Pro that has been upgraded over the years to have 16GB of RAM and 2.25TB of SSD. I have used OpenCore to allow it to run Monterey, but there is no denying that it is due to be replaced. For my purposes I think the closest new equivalent is the 14" MacBook Pro - the screen is big enough for me. The main challenge for me is the cost - the M2 Pro (12-core) with a 1TB SSD and 16GB RAM is €3,000 here in Germany. While it looks like a great machine I have been wondering whether or not a second hand Intel option might be better.

I have been looking around on eBay and the refurbished websites (they have 12 month guarantee) and a 2019 i7 Macbook Pro 16" (with the fixed keyboard!) sells for around €750 or roughly a quarter the cost of a new machine. This is pretty tempting but I'd be interested to hear what the Ars community thinks. Is it worth buying an Intel machine in 2023? Or is the M2 Pro so much better that is worth the additional cost?

I'm guessing that the last Intel version of MacOS will be in roughly 2026 so I'd be able to use it for a few more years at least.

That’s impressive longevity for your Crucial M500. It’s fascinating to see how well some older SSDs hold up under various use cases. My own experience with an older SSD wasn't as extensive, but it still managed to serve me well in different setups. One thing I've learned is that it's essential to monitor your system's overall health to prevent issues. For instance, checking your MacBook's temperature can be crucial for maintaining performance and longevity. If you're curious about how to do that, check out thesweetbits.com. Keeping an eye on these details can really help in managing your hardware efficiently.
