Oxwall Foundation is a non-profit unincorporated organization established to operate Oxwall software project.
Oxwall Foundation takes responsibility to:
Oxwall software up to version 1.1 was developed as a project of Skalfa LLC, a commercial organization. Since 2007 Skalfa was looking to enter the business of hosted niche social networks. The original plan was to adopt a third party software platform but the product management subsequently decided Skalfa needed its own underlying software platform.
In 2009 the company started private testing of the new platform. In January 2010 Skalfa launched hosted social network builder Wall.fm powered by Oxwall. In August 2010 Oxwall was released as an open source social network software project.
The plan to release the source code of Oxwall was to create competitive advantage for Skalfa's Wall.fm. Eventually it appeared that Oxwall itself quickly started gaining traction and passionate community.
In March 2011 Skalfa stakeholders voted to spin off Oxwall from Skalfa and make it a real, full-featured open source project. Oxwall Foundation was established to take the reign and accepted Skalfa's donation of intellectual rights and Oxwall trademark.
Since Oxwall itself had been born in Skalfa headquarters Oxwall Foundation staff was the original Skalfa team that worked on the project.
Skalfa LLC remains the most significant donator of Oxwall Foundation in terms of funds and development force.
