Hi- I am new to this forum.
I have a 1968 4 door sedan that was our family car forever when I was growing up. I recently inherited it when my father passed. It has a (not original) small block 350 connected to an unknown 2 speed transmission. Both have seen many miles. When i got the car the transmission was hesitating a bit before engaging on acceleration from idle. I checked the transmission fluid level and ruled out low fluid being the cause of the hesitation. I have been driving it once a month for about a year to keep checking it out and, on my last drive, something different happened.
I was going a sustained 55 mph and all of a sudden white smoke started coming out of the main vent on the dash. It did not smell like coolant - more of a burnt smell. When I slowed down to check the engine more white smoke came from under the hood - then it stopped. I drove home and going up steeper hills the transmission was slipping a lot. It engaged enough to get me home and I checked the transmission fluid again - it was empty.
Should I replace the transmission?
If I wanted to replace the engine as well what is a good engine/transmission setup for general use?
I love this car. it is so much fun to drive.
