I would like to add some text to the search page explaining some extra profile fields. How can i do this or what file do i need to edit?

Gavin, if you are referring to members search page then try playing with user_search_index.html (ow_system_plugins/base/views/controllers).
A lot depends on how exactly you want this to look like.Can you provide a draft mock up? I might suggest something else, depending on desired end result.
