Age discrimination or coincidence? | Forum

I started working in a new store, nobody has seniority as we all started at the same time. I have noticed that only the younger girls (early 20’s) have been assigned to the registers up front. There are 7 of them. There are 3 of us that are 40+ and have not been register trained at all. When I asked about getting register trained, I was told I was not needed up front. I’m tired of walking the sales floor while the younger girls get to just stand up front and chit chat while waiting to ring up customers. I will also add that this stores average customer is going to be a blue collar male so I don’t know if that played a factor in deciding who was positioned up front. Coincidence or should I say something?

It can be challenging to determine whether age is a factor or a coincidence in job situations. From my experience, age discrimination can sneak in, even if it's not always obvious. Companies might not admit it, but there’s a pattern where younger candidates seem to get more chances, sometimes unfairly. It's worth looking into employment discrimination laws and seeing if any advice or help is available. Remember, it’s essential to stay confident and know your worth. If you suspect age might be an issue, documenting everything and seeking legal advice might be a good step.
