As most people have probably heard, Alberta has had its share of wild fires lately. With that being said, my home just outside of Drayton Valley on an acreage has been lost to the flames a week and a bit ago.

Insurance so far is deeming it a complete loss. Right now insurance has a couple of companies lined up to provide a quote for debris removal.

I'm just curious if anyone has dealt with this kind of thing and can recommend a path forward. Some do's and don'ts if you will. I understand that insurance is going to be painful and I'm sure will try to pay as little as possible for everything. If anyone has some recommendations on dealing with the insurance company that would be appreciated as well.

The main comment I heard from friends who lost homes in the BC Okanagan fires a few years ago was that some insurance providers pushed them to submit a claim quickly, with the full and final list of everything that was lost.

I’m so sorry to hear about your loss; wildfires are devastating. I haven’t dealt with fire damage personally, but I have a friend who went through something similar a few years ago. When her home was severely damaged by a storm, she found dealing with the insurance companies to be a headache, especially when they tried to lowball her on repairs. Her best move was to get an independent adjuster to assess the damages and provide a detailed report. She also kept a thorough record of all communication with the insurance company. If it helps, a property damage lawyer st. petersburg really came through for her during the process. They helped ensure she got what she was owed and guided her on the right path to avoid common pitfalls.
