Hi,

I'm wondering if it's possible to display a different default avatar based on the profiles' gender?

Not without a core mod or a plugin. Sorry. Your best bet until a plugin or core change happens is probably to create two pages of usable avatars (one for male and one for female) and tell your members those are the only approved avatars for the site.
