I would really like to add this feature to my site, does anybody know how I would go about adding this feature/where I edit the role to allow this? (you cannot do this through the admin panel from what I can see

This is complicated modification which affects a lot of
functionality, so we strongly recommend not to modify the core files
since it will lead to the changes loss if you decide to update your core
files. The best way to achieve it is a new plugin development . Please see the crash course for more information here: http://docs.oxwall.org/dev:crash-course
