Try to test with different emails.

Your SMTP shouldn`t need touching,

 the Core of users should be able to register still if anything the registration confirmation will proberly be going into spam and that maybe causing the problem your spam settings on your yahoo or hotmail,

check them out.

Nature, yahoo and hotmail are known to block Oxwall's activation emails.
Let's do following:

Admin panel>>settings>>language>>find text key for activation email ( search by "Email verification" keyword).
Change this text key to something else.
Save changes.
Try to register again.

Nature, I still receive verification emails to my gmail accounts.

If you are testing with @hotmail.com, please follow the instructions and change title of your verification emails. Should solve the issue.
