im trying to change the default user group from "Free" to say "registered" without me having to do anything can someone please advise

Southy, I guess you mean either "Account type" or "User Role".
Changing name of the Account type:
admin panel>>profile questions>>edit account types>>mouse hover>>edit>>rename.
Changing User Role's name:
www.yoursitename.com/admin/users/roles/ >>click on the "Free" text in blue. Pop up where you can edit the name will appear.
