I've just noticed (never happened before) that when groups are now created the url is showing as mysite.com/groups/example-333 where as it should show and used to as mysite.com/groups/example
Anyone know why this is and how to fix it?

Abbey, group URLS always had following URL stucture: sitename.com/groups/groupID
URLs never included group titles ( unless you are using special plugin or custom modifications).

yeah sorry I have a plugin that makes the url appear that way for search engines. The numbers shouldn't be there though

You will need to contact plugin developer. We didn't change anything in "Groups" plugin from April. So I think that the issue with your other plugin.
