Am woundering how to disable the news feed from the welcome page ( main site home page ). Am trying to offer some privacy, where users would need to be loged in before they can see the news feed.

You can go to the Privacy and Permissions section in the Admin Panel/Global privacy and set Guests can view the site to "No", thus Guests will have to join your website in order to see the content.
You can remove newsfeed widget from the main page, but it will no longer available for members as well.
Other is considered as a custom code modification.
