I want to make a list of specific users in a simple text widget which makes their avatar and linked text name show up (see attached image), and of course would indicate if they are online or not.
Is there a code that would do this for me?

Jobee, you can create a simple plugin which will add a widget with the default online list. You can find the methods and functions which collect the users list in the following file: /base/components/user_list_widget.php
