check your permissions in order to upload photos you must have permissions for those folders at 777.

Samuel, regarding photo issues, create a separate topic in "Bugs Reports and Troubleshooting" section of our forum.
Regarding newsfeed, +1 to Kieron's answer. Currently you can't make main newsfeed for friends only.
