Has anyone ever noticed that the database schema for a new Oxwall install is over 5 meg?

I found this rather amazing, so today I decided to find out why. If you open the schema in ow_install/files/install.sql using Notepad++, you will find it contains just 2,303 lines. That's very little for a 5 plus meg file!

But when I looked at the database this schema creates, there are actually 111,228 lines (or records) which is an enormous amount for an "empty" database.

It's all to do with one table called base_geolocation_ip_to_country. That table actually contains 106,704 records before the script is installed.

I have no idea what this massive table is meant to do, but if it's to help fight Spam, clearly it doesn't work! Just take a look at the Spam that appears on the Oxwall forums on a daily basis and ask what good are 106,000 lines of country code doing to combat it?

I did a quick search and discovered that the USA appears 10,444 times, Australia 2,347 times and the United Kingdom 11,720 times.

I took a look at the databases for a couple of other Social Networking sites and none contain this data. Is Oxwall going a bit over the top on this one?

Thanks Chris. I was thinking the same thing.
