Can Oxwall Handle a Lot of Plugins? | Forum

Rob R
Rob R Aug 24 '14
My plugin count is growing pretty heavily.  Any concerns with too many plugins?  I have upwards of 40 activate plugins (in total including the pre-installed plugins).  So far everything works great.  Theres a few conflicts but I am well aware of each and have either fixed them or just had to disable a plugin.

That totally depends on the server capacities, software can handle as many as you like.

I'd be curious to hear how many plugins others have on their site and if they perceive any performance issues.

Ok, let's see what other community say on that matter.

i am running lots of plugin on a vps 8 cpu 8 gb ram

it has taken a lot  of server configs to get site load at around 6 seconds

i am at the point now the only thing i can do is optimize server sql requests as oxwall makes heaps of unnecessary requests, its fine on a new joined member but as time goes by friends grow mails grows everything gets slower and slower because every page loads everything

1000 friends + mails messages 50,000  + couple hindered for rest of page plugin etc

adds up to a hell of a lot of sql requests just for one user per page view

so if you only have 10 users and they been members for 12 months
and they all online at once puts a hell of a lot of stress on sql

to get the same stress levels as 10 long time members online at same time = 100 recent joined members online at same time

i am predicting in 8 months time my sql server will start throwing error because of to many requests and more then likely shut sql sever down

i have mentioned these problems in forums here and  only answer make suggestion in user voice

i should not have to make suggestion i have show oxwall the script needs fixing
i have send email to moderation 6 months 7 months ago on this problem and still no answer

deleted user, deleted content showing up everywhere is huge problem

profile newsfeed  is now showing friends uploaded photos in other newsfeeds from around the site

individual privacy setting for photo albums hug issue

plugin quality control none existent

profile question accounts useless

plugin dev allowed to sell crappy plugins that dont work and no support  huge problem

plugins i have bought that just dont work or how they work makes them useless
video uploader has not worked one day in 9 months of buying it
virool  virool has shut it doors to new members
auto online members has not worked since 1.7  no answer from dev
auto bloger  cant open settings in admin
facebook tool no responce from dev in 9 months on problem
music extreme just breaks everything
user clear just dont work and throws error everwhere
youtube auto poster out of memory on try get to admin settings
mosie games has had no development on it in 12 months
ads pro way to complicated for anyone to use
start page pro took me 3 days sorting the crappy htmls and shit out
and still does not work right
facebook go theme the dev just cant fix it
younett friend inviter worked for one month in last 12 months
younett  join dev just dont have clue on fixing it
younett media importer broke my site so bad had to do full site sql backup will never use it again
and another 10 plugins that just dont work how they should

Wow thank you Tammy for that candid feedback.  You bring up a good point about the multiplicative nature of requests as the member base grows.

Chris, thanks for the feedback.  It's also interesting to see what plugins people are using.  I am likely on the heavy side of things and am already experiencing quite a bit of conflicts across plugins.  I will likely be paring back my usage of plugins then.

If u have conflicts let the plug in developing know about them

Assuming they even bother to check their "support forums."  Some have been extremely helpful.  Others have been ... well I have no idea where they are.

Paypal is typically pretty good at getting your refund back for these types of fly-by-night "developers."

I currently have 50 plugins running on my site to which I will say I have no doubt that I can add more I have some deactivated simply because I no longer need the function they offer but I had a lot more at one time I think around 60 total

Joseph if I may ask, generally what kind of member activity are you seeing at your peek times and are you seeing a considerable slowdown during these times?
Joseph

it has been known to vary based on what my users like to do. I have a chat system that is based on third party so it doesnt effect my server and most users use that. I used to have a lot of crashing and slow downs so over time I just looked into what was slowing me down and worked to fix it. I run 2 oxwall sites off of one server. one site is an adult site so it stays busy and the other is a music site and it stays decently busy I never have a slow down.

Thanks Joseph.  To give me a sense, would you mind giving an example of what caused some of the more dire slowdowns and how you addressed it?  Just trying to anticipate issues in the future.

the old messenger system slowed things down but with the new one it has not seemed to be an issue and also sending mass emails and such caused some spikes we have over 10 thousand users so that is bound to happen

Quote from Chris_W Newsfeed

how did you get your two newsfeed plugins to play well together? I have both of these and they aren't working together.
