Hello Mark,
It is because you need you confirm your email before acessing oxwall site, I cannot help you on oxwall.org but on your own site you need to go here:
Yoursite.com/admin/settings/user
And uncheck confirm Email, See screen-shot for more info:

Mark, however by doing so, you allow users to register with fake e-mails, therefore you will have a lot of bounce back e-mail while mass mailing to your users
Probably spammers too. Just keep that in mind.
