Hi,
I am trying to add variable '{$username}' into language via the edit language screen. But the language string just returns the :-
{$username}
What am I missing here? I can see other example of variable in the language?

Because the variable belongs to the certain plugins only.
What are you trying to achieve? Please elaborate so we could assist you.

Ah! Okay. Well this relates to a third party plugin. So I will ask the dev. Thanks. I had assumed that things like $sitename and $username would be available system wide.
