By default the plugin says "Raised USD0 of USD80" or what ever your goal is and what not.  Anyway, it doesn't look very good.  However, if you go to languages in the admin side and in the drop down select the fundraiser plugin. You will see the "raised" language setting.  Delete {currency} and replace with a $ sign.  It looks SO much better on the front end and your users will be able to read it a little easier.  The pic is what the final product looks like.  Just looks nicer.
