FTP not working - how do I do it manually? | Forum

Hi,

FTP access has some issues on my install.

Until I resolve them can someone please tell me how to update the software, and update or install plugins and themes manually?

I have cpanel with the file manager so I can easily upload a zip file and uncompress it in the proper directory.

Basically, I need to know what directory to unpack each file into for each case:

Plugins, themes, and system upgrade.

Also, if there is a specific place for updates on themes and plugins to be "dropped" and let the system "find" them to be put into the proper place by the system I would appreciate that information as well.

With so many people seeming to be having problems with the FTP system, maybe a detailed explanation of how to just do manually what the FTP system does automatically would cut down on the multiple posts, and allow the developers to work on the FTP problems instead of answering the same questions all day.

I did do a search for this information and did not find it, so my apologies if this has already been covered.

Thanks for any help,

dp

for admin ftp to work it has to be to ftp user that created the oxwall install

so if you used account bill to upload the original oxwall install you need to use bill ftp account in admin
if you install Softaculous gadget thing is a problem
to fix it copy all file buy ftp and then delete them on the server
then upload ftp with the user you want to be able to use admin ftp

manual update plugins and themes  unzip them and overwrite them in ow plugins or ow themes then go to admin and you will see the plugin or theme update thing

manual core updates   unzip them  and overwrite the files by ftp
then go to yoursite.com/ow_updates

theres so many things on oxwall that they seam to not want ppl to know
or they want ppl to have such a hard time with oxwall they leave

Hi Tammy,

thank you for the speedy and informative post.

You are pretty close about the reason that my FTP access is hosed.  It is a combination of a softaculous install, shared hosting, and the oxwall install being hosted on an addon domain linked to a subdomain... just because it's funnier that way maybe?

It doesn't help that I forgot to write down all of the FTP information when I created the addon domain, so I already figured that I would have to reinstall the FTP portion without all of the re-directs and other hacks.

The simplest thing is for me to upload a zip file and unpack it in the correct directory.  I may just leave the system that way.  I actually prefer the direct approach, and being able to control exactly when and which files get replaced.

Thank you for the information and your time. Now I can install my plugins and updates, get the system working properly, and worry about fixing the FTP mess later.

Have a great day,

Ross,

thank you for that information.

I have the plugins installed without a hitch, but I do have another related issue.  One of the plugins is due to be updated.  I used my cpanel to unpack the new plugin into the ow_plugin directory overwriting the original files.  Then I removed and reinstalled the plugin, but the system has not recognized that the plugin has been updated.  Everything seems to be working fine so far.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help.

How did you remove and reinstall plugin?

What do you mean the system has not recognized that the plugin has been updated?- Do you see update notification?

Sorry for the slow reply, I am not getting any email notification on this thread.

I uploaded the update via ftp and manually unpacked it into the correct folder, and then I logged onto the admin panel and reinstalled the plugin.  That lasted for a day and then the notice came back as needing to be updated again.

I have moved to another hosting provider yesterday, so I will probably just set up the account properly for automatic update.

I'm sorry Dan, you confused me at all)) you said you tried to update plugin manually, and then you reinstall it after logging to admin panel.

Are you 100% sure the dev has not updated it again?
Have you compaired build of the plugins?
