There is a plugin for members status. http://www.oxwall.org/store/item/592  . Members can set there status and it does work. If i remember correctly, and i could be wrong, but i  don't think this plugin works with the Privacy setting if a user does choose to set his/her self as "Only Me" for other members not to see them online. I have not gotten back with the Dev on this yet, but he has always answered my questions. Shoot him a Pm, give it a day or two for any questions you may have on it.
