When I try to install a plugin it gives me this error:

You need to have your host upgrade your server to php version 5.6 or higher.

You need to have your host upgrade your server to php version 5.6 or higher.
Are you currently running on shared cPanel hosting? If so, most providers these days will give you the ability to select which PHP version your account runs on so be sure to check that out.
You should look for an icon called 'Select PHP Version'.
