1 minute interval is a bit hectic if you have a flood of user registrations and verifications, the server gives a "out of resources" error on load peaks

I am not that worried about mails being sent every minute, and can live with a 5 minute lag on status updates.

Shouldn't be an issue. If you had high activity, it may be a problem since it would try to send larger chunks of data at one time.
