new members to my site need my acceptance. To improve my process I'd love email notification. However, I don't find an option which notifies me by email about a new member waiting to access the site. If it's available: where do I find it?

Visit the store ........Purusothoman created a new plugin that does exactly what you need.
His plugins are good and you will get good and fast customer support if you would run into any obstacles .
Its not free but still cheap ;-)
