how will the new automatic updates be controlled?will we be able to have automatic updates for comments on photos even if we don't have photo updates on the newsfeed?

Joseph, I guess you are referring to the new "real time notifications" feature ( 1.5 version). In case if my guess is right, then newsfeed and real time notifications features are not connected. So even if something is not displayed in the newsfeed, but "activity" takes place ( for ex. somebody commented on my photo) I will still receive a real time notification.
