Whether you're a small business, a startup company, or an individual looking to up your fundraising game, there are plenty of places that offer pro bono nonprofit consulting. But since this advice is typically intended for businesses and other non-profits with more money than time on their hands, it's often not as practical as it could be. That's why I'm going to share my tips for getting expert advice on any topic—even if you're broke!

1. Start by networking.

The first step in getting pro bono consulting is to network. Start by talking to people you know and asking them if they know anyone who could help you out. Then, talk to the experts in your field, whether they're former coworkers or industry leaders at conferences and networking events. If none of that works, reach out on social media or email listservs; there are plenty of ways for experts in different fields to connect with each other online--and once you've found them, ask them about what kind of advice they'd be willing to offer for free!

2. Look for experts in your area of need.

  • Look for experts in your area of need. If you're looking for a pro bono consultant, try asking the following types of people:
  • Your local bar association. They may know organizations that offer pro bono services or can refer you to one.
  • The staff at your favorite nonprofit organization (or other charity). If they don't have an expert on hand, they might be able to make some calls on your behalf and find someone who does offer this kind of service--for free!
  • Other lawyers or law students who work with nonprofits as part of their studies or internships; many law schools have volunteer programs where students can offer their services for free or low cost in exchange for experience.*
