The "add as friend" button is not showing on users profile page. I tried deactivate and activate the "Friends" plugin to no avail.

Nothing is silly in this world. Feel free :)
A silly question from my side.. Are the users already friends? That's when you do not see that button.
Does this button not appear for all users or just for few users? Blocked users may not see that.

Kamins, it is also worth checking whether the role your user has, allows adding other people as friends. If your user is not allowed to add friends, then this button will not be shown.
You can check permissions of particular user role in admin panel>>privacy&permissions>>roles.

Thank you for the replies. I solved the problem at the end by uninstalling and reinstalling the Friends plugin and now it works as expected.
