Do you have a great idea for a novel, song, or other creative work? If so, copyright law can help protect your intellectual property. However, it’s important to know that copyright applies only to certain kinds of works — not all creative works are eligible (for example, recipes). In this post we’ll cover how to protect your work and some tips on how to do so effectively.

About Copyright

Copyright is a form of intellectual property that protects original works of authorship. It gives the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it, including:

The right to copy or reproduce the work in any material form; The right to perform the work publicly; and The right to communicate it (i.e., broadcast it).

All these rights are automatic and do not need to be registered with anyone for them to apply. However, registering your copyright with the Irish Government Office for Intellectual Property (INPI) does provide some extra protection as well as making sure you are recognised as the rightful owner should someone infringe on your rights by copying part or all of your work without permission
