I have been going through one by one and comparing them to a fresh install and copying over the text but there has to be a better way...

I have a lot of text items missing from languages after upgrading to 1.5.3. A fresh install has many more items in lang_1.php than my upgraded install - is there a way to regenerate the missing texts?

Mike, did you update only core or standard Oxwall plugins as well?
1. Try going to your admin panle>>languages>>and click "save" without doing anything.
2. Can you give examples of missing text keys?
