I've installed this and put the keys in, but the Captcha box is blank. The default "smart captcha" with Oxwall works fine, but I was hoping for something more secure.

Is this plugin still functional or is it broken now?

I have the same problem on an old installation which i updated to 1.6.

On a fresh installation it works, but just on signup page. On the contactus page the oxwall original is shown. I guess another plugin is disturbing it or something like this.

Are you sure you didn't have inversed the keys?
Maybe you put the public key in the field of the private key and vice versa?
I put recaptcha on my 3 websites and it works brillant.
