Quote from John I shamefully don't use Alt tags on my web sites but two are ranked No 1 on Google. Also, some social networking sites like one I'm planning can do without any Google exposure.

I agree that alt tags have a real purpose, but one way of making sure your members are not plastered over Google Images is to leave them off :-0

Thats wrong all images need alt tags if u dont want them index by google you specify that in ya meta tags and robots file and in google webmaster account 5

the photo will still be index if it does not have alt tag the only way it wont if is behind a login or robots txt or webmaster tell them not to index just because it does not have alt does not stop google indexing the image or page or any the content

behind a login  === google and all bots will not index
robots txt  ===== some bots  dont care and index stuff anyway
google / bing webmaster ===you tell them not to index something they wont

if you are going to do something dam well do it right

if you can not do html right  then the try sandcastle building
i am shore if you try hard enough in a few years you could be the king of sandcastle building

Tammy look at my website ,its looking good from my point of view . Give me your website and lets take a look at yours. I notice its you having all the problems with your website ,from all your posts .So if anybody should be building SC it should be you, which would go well with your childish attitude.I don't need hundreds of mods to make my website ,if I want to add something I use php and html code  to do the job.And has for indexing images ,if there is no Alt tags ,google can`t decipher the image so there for cant index the image ,which is easer that putting code into your htaccess file.Lets hope one day that google come up with a search Engine for stupid @unts ,it sure would help you Tammy.

You or wrong about indexing images ,if you do not put Alt tags around any image google bot can not decipher the image ,which means it cant read the code of the image ,so its impossible for google to index these images  .If you do it with text it well still index these kind of files in any webpage ,but it well affect your ranking ,if all your text files or full of missing alt tags.If you or building any html page you must make sure you get all your alt tags correct  in your text ,or it well give you a bad ranking in search engines .

I think it's important to stay focused and not get too obsessed. Google's algorithm goes well beyond Alt Tags. It looks at hundreds of other things too, so before worrying too much over photos, first try to produce a great site! And as Pete says Tammy, don't be afraid to share it with others.

I don't have an Oxwall site running on a server yet, but I have one site you can visit that doesn't contain a single Alt tag as far as I can recall. My small club makes Indian Myna Bird traps because the birds are in plague proportions in my area. These traps are made by thousands of people and most have web sites. If you do a Google search, my club may not even be mentioned unless you live in Australia. But if you do live in Oz, my site ranks Number five (5). I'm happy with that and one day I may find time to add some Alt tags.

I think John you might be right. At one point google could not read image code without Alt tags, thinking about it and the speed in which techknowledge moves .There is tec now that can identify a persons face.Techknowledge changes so fast ,and not to far in the future ,i can see computers learning them selfs ,i mean thinking like the human brain ,and in realatey we or going to have robo cops ,and robots that well indeed look like humans .I was watching a program over here in the Uk a couple of months ago ,were cars or now being made and tested ,these cars can drive themselfs .
