I setup the cron

first get ur cron working
deactivate all plugins 
then dowload the update pack use filzilla to ftp it to the sever
run the update

then dowmload the plugins that need updating from the store
 ftp them to ur server one by one and  let them update as u activate them

get ur site running then worry about ftp in admin
