We are very sorry for the issues that you have had with the server. Any time there is an issue, we do work to make sure it doesn't occur again. Unfortunately a DDoS is not something that can be predicted but we do have policies in place when something like this occurs. The server alerts do stay open after the issue has been dealt with to make sure it has been completely resolved. I'm thinking that most of the shared servers are not only shared among customers but shared with hosting companies as well.
I can't speak for Host for Web but our Arvixe Servers are not shared with any other hosting company.
