The closer we can get to the current login page below, without core edits, the better. This is how I believe join forms should be — short and painless. Attention span is fairly low online, so the shorter the process, the bigger chance you have of conversion. They can always fill out their profile once you nab their registration anyway. From there, you have an extra person on your email list instead of someone bouncing away from the join form because it's too long.+1 bryan.

Would be great to see a plugin that adds convenience functionality like this.
I've shortened my join process as much as possible also. A verification plug in (making a float box sit at the top or wherever of the screen telling them they are unverified and should go confirm their email address until they verify) would make this join process complete from start to finish once we trim the excess fat on the join form.
