I would like them to have this format
http://example.com/groups/[groupname]
Is this possible? If so, how can it be done?

James Geddes, have you seen this plugin http://www.oxwall.org/store/item/125 ? This can meet your needs. Be note if the plugin's version not compatible with your Oxwall software version, then contact plugin developer and ask him about compatibility.
