My users reported that after registering they cannot access the website anymore (any page) if they have not validated their email, they are blocked on the email validation page (see attachment). It's a problem as the email can take some time to arrive or end up in the spams.. Is it possible to deactivate this behavior?

you can solve this problem here
Go to dashboard
Go to settings
Go to general
Go to email settings
disable confirm email
Your problem is solved
but dont forget to to mark emails as verified
Go to users
Go to browse users
you will see UNVERIFIED EMAILS ON REGISTERED MEMBERS
check all and click verified
you are good to go

No, if I disable the email verification then anyone can join, which is not what I want. My issue is, I want to leave the email verification, but that users can still navigate the website as guests as long as they have not validated their email. Now they are blocked on the validation page and cannot go back to pages open to everyone. Is it possible to change this behavior?

Kali, in this case this is considered as a custom code modification because there is no such existing functionality. You may ask in custom code modifications forum how to add the Log out link to the email verification page. So users will be able to log out and use the site as a guest.
