I have tried to find where one can edit the text "Welcome to our new site! Feel free to participate in our community" that is displayed on the dashboard, but it eludes me! Can you point me in the right direction please?

James Geddes, you may change it in Admin Area > Pages&Menus > User Dashboard section.
Here you can see the Welcome widget and you may change text in widget's settings. See the screenshots.

James, if you want to change the Welcome widget message on the Main page, click the Customize this page button and do the same actions that I've described earlier.
