Posting group links in the newsfeed | Forum

Hi,

When I post a link to a group, in the site newsfeed. It displays the site name, and a powered by oxwall button. I would tend to expect that it should show the group name? And possibly the group icon.

Is this the intended behaviour? Or is the something wrong with my setup?

Thanks!

its how newsfeed and chat work
outside site links works ok but internal site links are bad it grabs any image
but most the time it grabs the power by oxwall footer logo

Thanks Tammy. hmmm..... I will look at seeing if I can fix it. Doesn't make sense at the moment.

Matt, we cannot reproduce that on our demo or test websites

For example the group is called Bike Club

The newsfee will parse it like that: Bike Club - group at Oxwall Community Software Demo

And the image will be the image of the group, you can check it on our demo, besides, before hitting send button, you can hover over the parsed image, you'll get 'change image' button, where you can select the images provided on the groups page

Hi Ross,

I'm not getting that result, on 1.74. I have a vanilla site that only has

Whe I post a group link.. I get the oxwall software logo (and the change image function)

And text...

'name of my site' - social networking

'name of my site' community

No group name.

I am testing this on a default oxwall install. No 3rd parties.

So that leaves me confused.

Any thoughts?

I just tested it on 1.7.4 it works the same as I described before, what is your newsfeed version? Try to deactivate all 3rd party plugins, switch to the defaul theme and see if the issue persists

Hi Ross,

Strange....

I have build 9100 of newsfeed. All 3rd party plugin disabled, set to origin theme.

Still same behaviour.

Matt, are you referring to the arconorium.....com domain?

If so, I just went there, the newsfeed parses the link strangely as a tooltip, besides you have video upload, link add and smile buttons below the status area, please disable all 3rd party plugins and let me know I'll do the testing again.

Hi Ross,

I have a vanilla oxwall setup for testing plugins, before committing them to the main site. I sent you a PM with deets.

Matt this happens because you closed your website for guest, we use oembed third-party service and it's kind of real-time parsing, when you post a link in the newsfeed, imagine someone tries to visit it, but he ends up on sign-in page, not group page, which is why you have only site name and attribution image while sharing, if you open your website for guests, it will work as I described above

Right! I kinda figured it might be.

But does that make sense internally?   If soemone wants to share a group link, in the news feed - then it would make sense that the linking worked within, if not without?

Tested it briefly on my main site.... (which is viewable by guests) I thought the attachment plugin would be the main culprit in making the group link not work. Will keep working through and testing, and see where the error sits.

Hmmm... I disabled all 3rd party plugins and opened my site to guests. But the group link does not show.

Did you need to clear the cache or something to get it working?

Guests cannot view groups in user roles permissions on that website

Ok,

I will note this workflow down.

Thanks Ross. It seems a bit confusing to me. I will need to find a way for users to be able to share groups on the newsfeed, within the site. If some one is promoting their group, on the newsfeed - it looks strange that they don;t get their image and title, but do get their link.

I will post on uservoice, and encourage a change. And I will make a note, in the group plugin forum, so that other oxwallers can see the workflow and logic.

Thanks for your help.

Matt, I will pass this parsed links display mismatch to our product design team, I'll let you know about their feedback on the matter.

plugin groups cover fixes the problem

@ Ross - Great, thanks.

@ Tammy - Bizarly, It was not working, with group cover enabled. But after I disabled all 3rd party plugins, to do checks. And then re-enabled them - it seems to now work....

(I wish plugins would 'remember' their settings... It;s annoying to have to resetup the site! :)

Any chance we get real-time parsing of internal links w/o opening the whole site and all data for "everyone"?

Marc we use Oembed functionality which is a third party service and this is how it works. What you want to achieve is considered as a custom code modification.

You will need to do that modification on your own or hire a programmer. You can do that here: http://www.oxwall.org/market/specialists

Besided I have passed this issue to our devs it will be fixed in one of the upcoming udpates. No exact date for now.
