check you dont have dev mode turned on in config.php.
If you have OCS Image Slider, Arrowchat and Instant Chat plugins installed and active these will also put a load on your db.
How many users on your site?
Consider adjusting your cron job to run less frequently.
If you are on a shared host package, it isn't ideal for a large active site. You may need to consider moving it to a larger resource host or consider vps.
