Plugin licenses question | Forum

I've bought many themes and plugins over the past year. I did not know I could not run them on two websites at the same time.  Plugins are being deactivated on one of the sites, now.  My question is... HOW do I purchase multiple licenses when the plugin only shows up once on my purchase list? It seems I can't register more than ONE IP address per plugin.  I don't want to create a separate account to keep all of these purchases straight.... what is the solution  and the protocol for running these plugins on multiple sites?

You need to buy plugin/theme second time and you'll get two licenses in your purchases. You can do that with one account

But when i did that with one of the plugins... only ONE IP address showed up as the purchase account and it was deactivated on the 2nd site anyway.  Confused.

Interesting, i never thought about this situation before.

And you tried using the reset option on the second plugin purchased plugin item

Yes, but there was only one IP address offered... no matter which one it landed on, the other would be deactivated.  I think that, if we purchase the plugin, we shouldn't have to purchase it twice or three times...frankly.  I think that's just greed, especially for the ones charging $50 or more for a plugin.  But, if we NEED to do it this way.. there should at LEAST be a clear-cut, SIMPLE way to buy additional licenses, perhaps at a lower rate... and tag them into our current account.  I'm sick of my plugins being shut off on one of my websites.  And there's no CLEAR details on how to do this properly if you own more than one website.

I wonder if it would be different if one was purchased and one was granted. If so, you could work out a deal with the developer to purchase the one at full price and get that one via the store directly, then the other one at the discount price and send the money to them via direct paypal and then they would just grant you the second license.

Maybe this is something that needs to be looked at to find out why a license number is not assigned a specific ip per purchase if there are two purchases. The system should not even be looking at NAME it should only be referencing this ip goes to this license and then internally the license can be assigned to the name.

It just appears that somehow it is seeing it as a duplicate rather than a individual purchase.

Also i know other setups such as the one for WHMCS modules, you can request a re-authorization of the module and the next time you use the module it will automatically assign that ip to that license.  That way if you move your site you can still use the module, you just have to re-authorize it.

Or maybe there should be a way for the developer to assign a specific ip to a specific purchase.

I certainly cant control others pricing or the way they run their store, or whether they would work with consumers on the granting deal. But there has to be some way internally to handle this issue so that it is easy and comfortable for the consumer.

Agreed...  I don't mind paying for the second or even third license... but there just doesn't seem to be a way to do it under the same account here.  And it's crazy to have 3 accounts here to keep track of three of the same purchases for 3 different websites.  That's just... lunacy.

Doesn't appear to matter how many accounts. If the purchase is from the same IP, it will still be an issue.

True DB, david did you say you have two sites with dif ip's or two sites with the same ip?

Two sites... different IP's...

In other words.. two different servers... two different web hosts. But both sites are owned by me.

Understood, yeah could be something that was overlooked during development but im sure ross will either have a solution or he will pass it to the devs to look at.  Lets see what his reply is today when he gets in.

It could be as easy as having site1 and site2 page options on your my items page.

Sounds good.  I'm putting up a 3rd site soon... so it'll be good to be able to get this cleared up. Thanks.

If you have a server and are running multiple sites from the same server/ip oxwall really shouldn't make you buy a second copy. I can understand in a situation like DB where you have different servers and Ips but to make people running multiple sites on the same server buy it twice seems super greedy to me.

Agreed OA, i certainly don't do that and i really don't know of any one who does on the same IP.  If they do they should stop immediately as it is very unethical.

Last time I sent a plugin dev my details on this site... they started uploading files to my FTP server and hijacked my sendmail features... My site was shut down for spamming 1000's of people and the web host WATCHED the guy log in and do it after he just got done removing the files he uploaded.  So.... how do I know my information will be safe if I give out my details in PM?

Sorry... but it's a fair question.

Yes it is a fair question and you should ask that sort of thing, it shows you are serious about what you do man...  You may not be able to trust some people with that info, but i promise you can trust ross. He is a good man with fine character and would never ever ever do anything in your server with malicious or anything other than look at your issue.

He has been doing this for many years and if he was a bad guy trust me people would be all over this forum saying so. He will not hurt your server, its just better for him to see whats going on and it will be faster if he has it in hand.

I hope that makes you feel better.  I have a flawless reputation around this place, and i will put my reputation on the line when it comes to ross accessing other peoples machines.  He is trustworthy... :)

PS... this is exactly why i never go into someones machine, not because i would do anything because i wont, its because i dont want to ever open up that can of worms.
