should I edit master pages? if yes which one. should i edit components - if yes, which ones?

sign in looks at the "blank.html"
drag and drop on the main page "customize" looks at the dndindex.html
the site uses the general.html
In most cases you won't edit the master pages. You will just add custom css in the admin panel. It really all depends on what you are trying to achieve. You can start by looking at the docs on theme customization. Use inspect element to find css elements you are wanting to try to adjust. If you are not familiar with css, there is plenty of info on the web to help. The master pages contain html, and php along with some script that functions with the core.

I have seen this Item. I just do not want a facebook like page. I want to edit it my way. If this plugin helps me do that, then I will do it for sure.

You can add to the sign in page. I'm not sure of how to add a sign in form. Maybe the plugin will help as a guide.

Which page does the join in form look at. I know now that the blank page is the sign in page. Which one is the join up page?

I believe the join form pulls from the core. There is css in the base css fiile to style it, but the layout is standard.
