When I try to upgrade from 1.4.0 to 1.4.1 (clicking on the platform update option in Admin dashboard), I get the 500 internal error message.

Enabling dev and debug doesnt give me any extra information, same error displayed.

Only entries in my log related are the following:

[Wed Oct 17 21:52:50 2012] [alert] [client 27.33.1.206] /home6/medaxcom/public_html/.htaccess: Option FollowSymLinks not allowed here, referer: http://mysite/admin/update-core

The best way for the upgrade will be get the upgrade zip, uninstall it and run upgrade. This worked well for me without any issues.

I have lost hope for automatic installation using FTP in Oxwall. It has never worked for me.

Maryam, can you try going to /public_html/.htaccess and commenting out the first line of Option FollowSymLinks. To commend out lines in .htaccess insert # at the beginning of the line.

Thanks Purus,...this worked:

1) donwload update zip file to local machine.

2) upload the zip file to server

3) Unzip in the server so that it overrides the files.

4) yoursite.com/ow_updates

Same here and I don't believe it ever will as it's designed to work in a very specific environment.  It would be good to know exactly how the Oxwall team test this stuff, what their environment set-up is and so on.

I use the following hack to update my plugins without FTP, but it seems that updating the platform has its own FTP code:
