there are options to stop posts from several places in newsfeed settings except for avatar which seems to be an issue on my site

Joseph, are you trying to deactivate avatar as admin or as a use from newsfeed? Can you give steps I should follow on your site to reproduce the issue?

/admin/plugins/newsfeed/customization on this page you can select what gets posted on the newsfeed and what does not and avatar is not an option to turn off

Jospeh, avatar appears in the newsfeed either when user first registers or when he changes his avatar. So by turning off "New user registration" and "User profile edit" you will remove avatars from the newsfeed.
If you would like to show all newsfeed items but without avatar ( for example to display that UserA joined your site but without avatar in newsfeed but with avatar on user profile page) then you will need to modify the code.
