I switched from Elgg a few years ago and much preferred Oxwall. I've had no issues with it. I know it is no longer supported, but I am thinking of trying to revive my dead online community and wondering if Oxwall can keep on keeping on without any support, or if I should wipe everything and just do a clean start with something different. Thought of UNA but my webhost isnt fond of switching the default setting of "allow_url_include "

Some developers here keep it alive and update missing features with "plugins" in the store. They are keep the software alive NOT the oxwall team. They just keep the oxwall.com server alive and probably win a lot time to let others people build they software FREE. They just need approve the plugins... thats all. And then they focus build "skadate"
So yes you can still use it and the devlopers here try update it with release new plugins all the time

I have a community with OxWall since OxWall was invented. It has grown a lot, I have it stabilized in 18,000 members eliminating those who do not connect when new ones are registered. Every day I have 4 or 5 members who are paid (€ 25/12 months).
I make my own plugins and I have some for sale.
Sometimes I get angry at OxWall when I see that they do develop it but they do not publish updates. I download them (it's free and legal) from GitHub. You can install them manually from there, but I have the OxWall core with many modifications made by myself and I have to look at them before, line by line.
I've looked at other scripts, but I don't see them as flexible or powerful or customizable.
I will continue with OxWall, moving a website like mine would be impossible and it would take years to get it to be similar.
This is my experience with OxWall.
If you dare to stay with us, you will NOT have the official support of OxWall, but you will have the user community. There are also professionals here who work with this and more software and can help you, they will charge you, but if you have a serious or urgent problem it is good to know that they are prepared, that they are professionals and that they are available.

I believe that oxwall has transitioned from a novice footprint to more of an experienced requirement due to lack of support from oxwall. The longer it goes without support the more an admin will need to know in order to keep it maintained and synced with currrent releases of other dependencies.

@Dave and @Patricia - that's my only fear. I'm not tech savvy at all, just hoping that the basic simple things i have running it will stay working. I really wanted a 'ning' type site. something with albums, forums and personal user blogs. Elgg was horrible as far as notifications and no matter what i had in place the spam was horrible. id wake up to hundreds of new spam accounts. And Layth , a member here who had created a theme i liked that actually worked with mobile helped me with customizing a look that would appeal to the audience -- it just sort of ticked all the boxes. HumHub is nice and smooth looking but lacks the 'all in one' personalized feel. I tried Dolphin but it wasn't quite right either. Oxwall is just a really great option for a fully social network.

I originally used Elgg as well and came here many years ago. Luckily there are still plenty of us volunteers around to help you if you get stuck. So best you can do is dive right in and see what comes of it. :)

Thanks Dave - I think I'll stick with what we've got because I do quite like it. Oxwall is a good fit for what it is we wanted to do. Glad I chose it. :)
