How can you control what appears in the news feed, besides deleting it every-time? It seems redundant to have widgets showing New Items, then the Feed.

Currently there is no way to control it. This feature will be added later: admin and user will be able to control what features can be added to newsfeed.

Now on v1.5.3 as admin you go to plugins - newsfeed- edit -content
