What file do I have to open to edit the homepage? My site is currently locked down to registered members so its display just the login box.

You need to log in as admin of the site, open "main" page and click "customize" buttom.

If you meant something else by "homepage", let me know.

i think you have the join button on place one in the menu, you can go to admin,pages and menu and set index on number one and join on number 2 with drag and drop.

the firt in the menu is where people come when they come on your site or logout.

You can change this text in  admin panel>>settings>>language search by "before proceeding" keyword.
